The Purple Rock Crab is a stocky, dark-coloured crustacean found in the intertidal and shallow subtidal zones of rocky shores, particularly common around southern Australia. Adults reach roughly 5–6 cm across the carapace and are recognisable by their robust claws and mottled purplish or reddish colouration. Largely nocturnal, these crabs shelter in crevices and under rocks during the day, emerging to forage on algae and detritus at night. Divers exploring rocky reefs and surge zones may spot them wedged in tight spaces; they are quick to retreat and will raise their claws defensively if disturbed.
