Plumose Anemone

Metridium senile

Rank
Species

The Plumose Anemone is a feathery filter-feeder that clings to rocky outcrops and wreck structures in cool temperate waters. Its frilly tentacles—packed with stinging cells—spread wide to trap plankton drifting past. Divers often spot colonies clustered densely together, their cream, orange, or white bodies swaying gently in the current. When threatened or disturbed, the anemone retracts completely into a squat, inconspicuous knob.
