The peacock mantis shrimp is a flattened, vividly patterned crustacean found in Indo-Pacific coral and rocky reefs, typically at depths of 5–40 metres. Its most distinctive feature is a pair of powerful raptorial claws (called raptors) folded beneath its body; when prey approaches, it strikes with explosive speed and force. The shrimp hunts small fish, crustaceans, and molluscs by ambushing from a burrow or crevice.
