Nassau groupers are robust, heavily built fish found around reef structures and rocky outcrops throughout the western Atlantic and Caribbean. They are recognisable by their variable colouration—typically tan to grey-brown with darker bars and blotches—and a distinctive dark stripe running through the eye. These ambush predators hunt from crevices and caves, lunging at passing prey with surprising speed. They can reach considerable size and often tolerate close approach from divers, though they are now listed as critically endangered due to overfishing and habitat loss.
