The mimic octopus is a master of deception, changing colour, pattern, and body shape to impersonate other species—notably venomous sea snakes, lionfish, and flatfish. Found in Indo-Pacific coastal waters, typically at depths between 5 and 40 metres, it hunts small fish and crustaceans across sandy and muddy substrates. Its ability to rapidly shift appearance and mimic the behaviour of dangerous neighbours is a remarkable strategy for evading predators without the cost of producing venom itself.
