Mexican Slider Turtle

The Mexican slider turtle is a semi-aquatic freshwater reptile, not typically encountered on coral or rocky reefs where most recreational diving occurs. Found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and swamps across Mexico and the southern United States, it basks on logs and banks rather than inhabiting deeper dive sites. Divers exploring cenotes or freshwater lagoons in tropical regions might spot individuals paddling near the surface or resting underwater; they are generally shy and will slip away if approached.
