The Mayan cichlid is a stocky, dark-coloured fish native to Central American freshwater systems, particularly in Mexico and Belize. It grows to around 25 cm and inhabits slow rivers, swamps, and lagoons where it feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and plant matter. Both parents aggressively guard their territory and offspring, making them fascinating to observe during breeding season in their natural habitat.
