The mahogany snapper is a small lutjanid found in shallow reef and seagrass habitats throughout the western Atlantic. Named for its reddish-brown coloration, it typically hovers near structure in small aggregations, feeding on small fish and crustaceans. Divers often spot them in 5–30 m depth, where they are wary but curious, allowing close approach if movement is slow and deliberate.
