Long-Spined Sea Scorpion

Taurulus bubalis

Rank
Species

The long-spined sea scorpion is a small, well-camouflaged sculpin found on rocky and sandy seabeds in shallow northern waters. Its body is covered in bony plates and armed with sharp spines—the most prominent running along its back—which serve both as defence and camouflage among weeds and stones. These spiny fish are territorial and may remain motionless for long periods, making them easy to miss until one stirs.
