Ling are elongated fish with smooth, greenish-bronze bodies and a single long dorsal fin running the length of the back. Found on rocky and mixed substrates from shallow water down to 100 m or more, they hunt small fish and crustaceans by ambushing from crevices and rough ground. Divers often spot them poking their heads out from rocky holes, where they remain largely stationary unless disturbed. They're common across the northeast Atlantic and around the British Isles.
