Lined Seahorse

The lined seahorse is a small, upright fish found in seagrass beds and shallow coastal waters of the western Atlantic, from Nova Scotia to the Gulf of Mexico. Its body is covered in prominent ridges and a distinctive pattern of lines, giving it excellent camouflage among seagrass and algae. Like all seahorses, males brood eggs in a pouch until the young are ready to fend for themselves—a remarkable reversal of typical fish reproduction. These sedentary creatures anchor themselves with their prehensile tail and feed on tiny crustaceans drifting past.
