The leather bass is a robust grouper found in rocky reefs and drop-offs across the eastern Pacific. Dark grey to brownish coloration and a heavy, somewhat flattened body distinguish it from other groupers in its range. Like many groupers, it hunts small fish and crustaceans from crevices and rocky shelter, relying on quick ambush strikes.
