Kina

The kina is a sea urchin found in shallow waters around New Zealand and southern Australia, recognisable by its dark purple or black spines and greenish test (the hard shell beneath). It grazes on kelp and algae, and can form large aggregations on reef and rocky habitats. Divers often encounter kinas at depths of 5–20 m, where they shelter in crevices during the day and move across the seafloor at night to feed.
