Honeycomb Stingray

The honeycomb stingray is a large, flattened ray with a distinctive reticulated pattern across its disc—a network of pale lines against darker skin that resembles honeycomb. It inhabits coastal waters and estuaries from the Indo-Pacific region, typically found on sandy or muddy substrates at depths of 5–80 metres. Like other stingrays, it possesses a venomous spine on its tail and feeds on benthic invertebrates and small fish by ploughing through the seafloor. Divers are more likely to spot it resting on the bottom than swimming, and a cautious approach is advisable—stepping on a buried ray invites a defensive strike.
