Grey Whale

Grey whales are massive baleen cetaceans that undertake one of the longest migrations in the animal kingdom, travelling between Arctic feeding grounds and Mexican breeding lagoons. Divers rarely encounter them underwater, but in shallow coastal waters—particularly near breeding sites in Baja California or feeding grounds off Alaska and Russia—sightings are possible during migration seasons. These robust, mottled-grey animals reach around 14 metres in length and often feed by filtering sediment from the seabed, a feeding behaviour unique among baleen whales. Their barnacle-encrusted skin and prominent rostrum are distinctive features.
