Green Moray

The green moray is a large eel found in rocky crevices and rubble throughout the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and eastern Pacific. It grows to around 3 metres and is recognisable by its yellowish or greenish body (the colour varies with water chemistry and diet) and the pale band along its lateral line. Despite their formidable appearance, green morays are generally docile unless provoked; they hunt at night for fish and crustaceans, remaining in their lairs during the day. Divers often spot them with their mouths open—a behaviour that aids respiration rather than a sign of aggression.
