The goldspotted sand bass is a compact serranid of the eastern Pacific, recognised by its stocky build and the golden spots scattered across its body. Found over sandy and rocky reefs from the shallows to around 60 metres, it hunts small fish and crustaceans with quick ambush strikes. These bass are territorial and solitary by habit, though they may gather loosely at productive feeding grounds.
