Garfish

The garfish is instantly recognisable by its needle-like body and elongated, tooth-lined jaws that give it a prehistoric appearance. Growing to around 93 cm, this sleek predator hunts small fish in shallow coastal waters and estuaries across the Atlantic and Mediterranean, typically at depths of 10–50 metres. Watch for them near the surface at dawn and dusk, when they chase prey with sudden bursts of speed. Their bright green bones—a harmless quirk of their physiology—can be startling to divers used to conventional fish anatomy.
