Galápagos Garden Eel

The Galápagos Garden Eel is a slender, burrowing species found in sandy areas off the Galápagos Islands. Like other garden eels, it lives in colonies and anchors itself in the seabed with a mucus-lined burrow, poking its head out to feed on small plankton and crustaceans passing in the current. Divers will spot them at moderate depths in open sand—they are quick to retreat if approached, but patient observation often rewards a close view of their delicate feeding behaviour.
