French Grunt

French grunts are small silvery fish with distinctive yellow stripes running along their body, earning them their name. Found in shallow coastal waters and around reefs throughout the Caribbean and western Atlantic, they typically school in loose aggregations during the day before dispersing to feed at night. Their characteristic grunting sound—produced by grinding their pharyngeal teeth—is audible to divers and gave the grunt family its common name.
