The French angelfish is a striking reef resident with deep blue-black colouring and bright yellow stripes running vertically across its flattened body. These medium-sized pomacanthids often move in pairs through shallow coral and rocky areas, typically at 5–20 metres, across the western Atlantic and Caribbean. They graze on sponges, tunicates, and small invertebrates living on reef surfaces, and pairs are known to defend their feeding territories vigorously from intruders.
