The flowery cod is a hefty grouper found in Indo-Pacific coral reef and rocky habitats, typically between 5 and 40 metres. It blends into rocky crevices with a mottled brown or grey body peppered with darker spots and blotches. Large individuals can exceed 1 metre and are solitary hunters, ambushing small fish and crustaceans from concealed spots. Divers often encounter them resting near overhangs or within caves, where they remain motionless until prey approaches.
