Flamboyant Cuttlefish

Metasepia pfefferi

Rank
Species

The flamboyant cuttlefish is a small, sedentary species found on sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow Indo-Pacific waters, typically below 5 metres. It rarely swims, preferring to crawl along the seabed using its arm tips, but when threatened it displays spectacular colour changes—flashing vibrant reds, yellows, and whites across its body in rapid waves. The species hunts small crustaceans and fish at night, relying on these dazzling displays as both hunting lure and predator deterrent.
