European Lobster

Homarus gammarus

Rank
Species

The European lobster is a formidable crustacean with a deep blue-black carapace, massive claws, and long antennae—unmistakable in rocky and kelp-rich habitats across the northeast Atlantic. Nocturnal and solitary, it shelters in crevices and burrows by day, emerging at dusk to hunt smaller invertebrates and scavenge. Divers exploring rocky reefs and wrecks in cooler waters, especially around Britain and Scandinavia, may spot one at depth, though their wariness and habit of retreating into cover makes sightings brief and rewarding.
