The Eurasian minnow is a small, slender freshwater fish found across northern Europe and Asia in clean, fast-flowing streams and rivers. Rarely exceeding 12 centimetres, it is easily overlooked despite being abundant in suitable habitat. During breeding season, males develop striking red undersides and darker markings, making them briefly conspicuous in shallow gravel beds where they spawn in groups.
