The estuary cod is a robust grouper found in shallow coastal waters and estuaries across Indo-Pacific regions. Mottled brown to grey colouration and a relatively stocky build help identify it in murky or clear water alike. These fish are ambush predators, lurking near structure and vegetation before striking at passing prey. They tolerate low salinity better than most groupers, making estuarine habitats their namesake stronghold.
