Eschmeyer's Scorpionfish

Eschmeyer's scorpionfish is a cryptic ambush predator found on rocky and coral-covered slopes, typically between 200 and 400 metres deep. Its stout body and elaborate fringing membranes along the head and fins provide effective camouflage among rubble and coral branches. Like other scorpionfish, it relies on venomous spines to deter predators and remains motionless for hours, waiting to engulf passing prey in a rapid strike.
