Dugongs are large, rotund marine mammals with a whale-like body, flippers, and a fluked tail. Found in warm coastal waters from East Africa to Australia, they graze on seagrass meadows in shallow depths, sometimes appearing in 1–10 metres of water. Divers in the right region might encounter them alone or in small groups moving slowly across the seafloor, their heads down as they feed. They are gentle and curious but generally keep their distance from divers.
