Cuckoo Wrasse

Labrus mixtus

Rank
Species

The cuckoo wrasse is a striking wrasse found in rocky and kelp habitats from the shallows to depths around 100 m across the northeast Atlantic and western Mediterranean. Males display brilliant blue and orange-red colouration, while females are orange-red to pink with white markings. These wrasses are sequential hermaphrodites—females can change sex and become males—and they hunt small crustaceans and fish larvae by day, often hovering close to the seabed.
