The cowtail stingray is a broad, flattened ray with a distinctive whip-like tail armed with a venomous spine. It inhabits shallow coastal waters and estuaries across the Indo-Pacific, often resting on sandy or muddy bottoms where it feeds on molluscs and crustaceans. Divers encounter it in murky bays and river mouths; approach slowly and give it space, as the spine is a genuine defence.
