Coral Trout

Plectropomus pessuliferus

Rank
Species

Coral trout are robust predators found on coral reefs across Indo-Pacific waters, typically patrolling rocky outcrops and reef edges at depths between 5 and 60 metres. They are stocky fish with a distinctive pattern of blue spots scattered across reddish or brownish flanks, and their eyes are notably large. These ambush hunters remain alert and wary of divers, often retreating into crevices when approached, but they are rewarding to observe if kept at a respectful distance.
