The Common Sydney Octopus is a large, intelligent cephalopod found in rocky reefs and kelp forests along the southern Australian coast. It grows to around 1.4 metres and exhibits rapid colour and texture changes to blend with its surroundings or signal alarm. Nocturnal and solitary, it hunts crustaceans and molluscs from crevices, using its arms to probe into tight spaces. Divers often spot individuals sheltering in dens during daylight hours.
