Common Starfish

Asterias rubens

Rank
Species

The common starfish is a five-armed predator found across northern European waters, typically in shallow to moderate depths on rocky and sandy substrates. Its brick-red or orange body, studded with small spines, makes it easy to spot on the seabed. These starfish are voracious feeders, capable of extracting bivalves from their shells by forcing the valves open with their tube feet—a slow but effective hunting method that can take hours.
