The common octopus is a master of camouflage and intelligence, capable of changing colour and texture in milliseconds to match its surroundings. Found across the eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean, and beyond, it hunts nocturnally along rocky reefs and sandy seabeds, typically at depths of 5–100 metres. Watch for rapid arm movements as it probes crevices for crabs, molluscs, and fish, or observe its curious approach if it spots a diver. Eight-armed and highly individualistic, each octopus has a distinct personality—some bold, others shy.
