The Caribbean reef shark is a stocky, gray predator that patrols shallow reef edges and drop-offs throughout the Caribbean and western Atlantic. Growing to around 1.6 m, it is often the most abundant large shark on healthy reefs, moving with purposeful efficiency close to the bottom. Divers frequently encounter them in 5–40 m of water; they are curious but rarely aggressive unless food is present. This species forms loose aggregations and is a key indicator of reef health.
