Caesar Grunt

The Caesar Grunt is a stocky, silvery fish with a robust jaw and blunt snout, common on coral and rocky reefs across tropical Atlantic waters. Schools of them patrol reef edges and sandy patches, often in loose aggregations that shift throughout the day. They feed by snapping up small crustaceans and fish from the bottom, and are named for their audible grunting calls, which they produce by grinding their pharyngeal teeth—sounds that carry well through the water. Hardy and approachable, they are a frequent sight for divers at moderate depths.
