Bumblebee Shrimp

Gnathophyllum americanum

Rank
Species

The Bumblebee Shrimp is a small, boldly striped cleaner shrimp found in shallow tropical and subtropical reefs. Its body is banded with bright yellow and dark brown or black, making it instantly recognisable even in low light. Despite its eye-catching colours, it remains a shy species, typically hovering near crevices and coral heads where it picks parasites and dead skin from passing fish. Divers often spot them at depths of 5–30 metres, but patience and a gentle approach are needed to observe them closely.
