Brown Trout

Brown trout are streamlined predators found in cool, well-oxygenated freshwater throughout Europe and beyond, though some populations migrate to sea and return to rivers to spawn. They are recognisable by their olive-brown body with red and black spots rimmed in pale halos, and distinctive large mouth. In rivers and lakes, they hunt small fish, crustaceans, and insects—often feeding at dusk or in low light. Divers in clear upland streams may spot them holding behind rocks or sunken logs, where they wait for prey drifting downstream.
