The black and white snapper is a striking lutjanid with bold dark and pale bands running the length of its body—a pattern most vivid in younger fish and often fading to silvery grey in adults. Found in Indo-Pacific coral reef and rocky environments, typically from 5 to 40 metres, these snappers school in loose aggregations and hunt small fish and crustaceans. They are wary fish, favouring deeper reef edges and caves during the day.
