Bicolor Parrotfish

The bicolor parrotfish displays the bold two-tone colouration that gives it its name: males are bright blue-green on the head and front body, shifting to deep red or purple behind. Females and juveniles are more uniformly olive or grey. Found on coral and rocky reefs across the Indo-Pacific, usually in shallow to moderate depths, this species feeds by scraping algae from reef surfaces—watch for the characteristic crunching sounds as it grazes. Like other parrotfish, it produces fine sand as a byproduct of feeding, contributing to beach formation across tropical reefs.
