Batfish

Batfish are unmistakable on the reef: laterally flattened, disc-shaped bodies with tall dorsal and anal fins that give them an almost triangular profile when viewed head-on. Juveniles are particularly striking, with elongated fins and bold patterns that fade as they mature. Schools of batfish often hover near coral heads and rocky outcrops in shallow to moderate depths, feeding on small crustaceans and plankton. They are curious but wary, approaching divers before darting away if approached directly.
