The Australian Giant Cuttlefish is the largest cuttlefish species, reaching up to 5 metres in length. These intelligent cephalopods inhabit southern Australian waters, typically at depths between 20 and 200 metres, though they may venture shallower during breeding aggregations. Instantly recognisable by their enormous size and powerful build, they display the full repertoire of cuttlefish colour-changing and pattern-shifting behaviour, capable of transforming appearance in milliseconds to communicate or hunt. Currently listed as near-threatened, their populations face pressure from fishing and habitat change.
