Australasian Snapper

The Australasian Snapper is a robust, deep-bodied fish with a blunt head and large mouth, growing to around 1.3 m. Its colouration ranges from silvery-pink to reddish, often with darker fins and a distinctive dark spot near the tail base. Found over rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and kelp forests from shallow waters down to 200 m, this species is a bold ambush predator that hunts small fish and crustaceans. Snappers are prized by recreational and commercial fishers across southern Australia and New Zealand, making them a common and memorable encounter for divers in their range.
